Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
Sarah's story begins early on a July morning in 1942, with French police beating on the door of her family's Paris apartment. Her 4-year-old brother is terrified at the uproar, so Sarah locks him in their secret closet for protection, thinking she will return for him later in the day.
